To lose a loved one can certainly be one of the most challenging moments in the life of any individual. It can take a while coming to terms with the reality but the sooner a person starts making an effort at that, the better it is for his own well-being. It is true that the grief one experiences at such a loss is difficult to quantify by conventional means because it is more of an emotional experience and must be dealt with on the subjective plane rather than objective.

No amount of consoling may help a person overcome his grief in such a case, especially, if he or she has had a very close bond with the deceased. In such a situation, one should not force the person to avoid expression of grief which could help unburden his psyche of the loss. To cry is not such a bad thing as it can actually help a person deal with his loss better.

It is quite natural that if someone loses a close friend or a relative who he or she has shared a good part of their life with, it would be difficult to deal with the outburst of emotions in an instance. It is here that true friends are tested and people are tried out for if they can really lend a shoulder to a dear friend or relative in grief. It is relatively easy to console someone you don't have any intimate relationship with a few kind words. But dealing with the same situation for a close friend is certainly not that easy.

In the latter case, you would be required to adopt a patient approach and let the person in grief speak his or her heart out about what he or she is feeling. This is surely a period of intense emotional turmoil which needs to be dealt with in a healthy manner to avoid setting in of depression. It is natural to have an inclination for depression in such a situation but it is important to provide such a person with emotional support to ensure that the person can deal with the grief in a more or less balanced manner.

It is difficult to say how much time one should grieve as there are no objective criterion to come up with a measure for what one human being feels for another. However, it is better to try not to prolong the period although he or she may still occasionally experience moments of intense grief when the memories of the deceased come alive. It requires a balanced person with a practical outlook on life and a healthy emotional quotient to help the person in grief and make him realize the truth while caring for his or her feelings at the same time.

There are certain areas of life which one must start looking into as soon as possible after the loss of a breadwinner. No matter how great the loss, no one can deny the fact that life goes on but only that it takes time for this fact to sink in for those who have just been through such a difficult moment. It is at such an hour that someone from the family must take up the financial responsibilities to not let the family face an uncertain future. The basic necessities of life still remain the same, one would still need a place to stay and means to survive as a social creature.

It is this side of life and the burden of responsibilities which may force one to not let the grief overcome his sense of balance and purpose in life and strive ahead to maintain their practical existence. The finances of the deceased should also not be left unattended and the responsible ones should come forward to assist in this seemingly irrelevant task in view of the loss but one which would attain significance sooner than one may realize.

This is the reason why one should not let his emotions dominate his sense of practical balance and the courage to fight for survival of his family. It is the surviving ones who must be seen as a source of strength by the grieving to realize the true value of relationships and achieve the true purpose of life. If the family comes together at this hour, it would not only help bring down the period of grieving but also create an internal support system. This to a great extent would help them realize their potential as individuals who care for and would stand by each other no matter what the situation.
